Shimla Hundreds of vegetable growers under the banner of the Himachal Kisan Sabha (HKS) today staged a protest at the sabzi mandi in Dhalli against exploitation and unfair treatment being meted out to them by arhtiyas (traders).
Led by state president of the HKS Kuldeep Tanwar, the villagers met Secretary, Agriculture, Ram Subhag Singh, who is also the chairman of the State Agriculture Marketing Board, to bring irregularities to his notice.
Tanwar said the farmers who were suffering on the account of inclement weather conditions like hailstorm and damage by wild animals were exploited by the traders at the sabzi mandi in Dhalli where they bring their produce. “In the absence of electronic weighing machine, the agents not only weight the produce less by a few kilos but also add 2 kg as weight of the sack, thereby causing loss to the farmers,” he added.
